This homemade strawberry frozen yogurt is creamy, sweet, deliciously smooth, high in protein, and made with just THREE ingredients!! It seriously couldn’t be easier to make frozen yogurt at home. It’s fun to make, made with simple, nutritious ingredients, and much cheaper too!
I received an ice cream maker for Christmas, and I am having SO MUCH FUN testing out fun recipes this summer! It’s slightly ridiculous at how quickly just my husband and I can go through a batch of ice cream. I enjoy eating dessert literally every night in the evening, and while it’s usually a homemade baked good, lately it’s been homemade ice cream! Or let’s be honest: often it’s a homemade baked good AND homemade ice cream. Pretty much the best combination ever is some sort of homemade chocolate dessert with ice cream in my opinion. Most recently it’s been these amazing fudgy brownies. Seriously slightly mind-blowing how those brownies taste so delicious and are 100% naturally sweetened with no added sugar!
Anyways, I have said this many times before, but I truly feel that the best recipe ideas come up on the spot when I’m craving something in particular or when I’m just using ingredients I already have on hand at home. I will freely admit I’m not the most creative person, so sometimes I worry I will run out of new recipe ideas for this blog. But then at the most random times I have a hankering to be in the kitchen and test out some idea, usually because it sounds good to eat at the moment!
All that to say, that is how this three-ingredient strawberry frozen yogurt idea was born. I happened to have a large container of unopened Greek yogurt in the fridge, as well as some fresh strawberries that were very ripe and needed to be used up soon. And as previously mentioned, I’ve been really enjoying using my ice cream maker…so I decided on a whim to try making homemade frozen yogurt! To be honest I wasn’t sure how it’d turn out as I’ve never put yogurt in the ice cream maker before, but thought it was worth a shot. And I’m SO excited to share this super delicious AND easy AND nutritious strawberry frozen yogurt with you!
A little more about the ingredients…
Ingredients and Substitution Ideas
Strawberries
You will need 1 pound of strawberries for this recipe! I have only tried this recipe using fresh strawberries, but you could probably try with frozen. It may be a bit more difficult to blend if using frozen strawberries, however. Also….while so far I’ve just tested this recipe using strawberries, I am pretty sure you could substitute other fruits in place! I’m excited to try variations next time….some ideas are peach frozen yogurt, cherry, blueberry, raspberry, pineapple, etc…let me know if you try substituting other fruits!
Greek Yogurt
I used Greek yogurt in this recipe, but I imagine you could try using regular yogurt instead. However, I love how thick, creamy, and protein-packed that Greek yogurt can be. I used full-fat Greek yogurt, and I do HIGHLY recommend using full-fat yogurt (whether plain or Greek) because it will end up being much creamier and more delicious. If you use nonfat yogurt, the frozen yogurt will be icy and not nearly as good. I also used a plain Greek full-fat yogurt, but if you want a sweeter frozen yogurt you can use a vanilla yogurt. Lots of options for yogurt here! And if you prefer this to be plant-based, you could try using a non-dairy yogurt such as one with coconut or almond milk. However, I also haven’t tried this so I’m not 100% sure how the end product will turn out!
Honey
You will just need ¼ cup honey to sweeten this entire batch of frozen yogurt! You could also substitute pure maple syrup or agave in place of the honey if you want.
How to Make Homemade Frozen Yogurt
You guys. Making homemade frozen yogurt might sound complicated, but this recipe takes literally about 5 minutes of hands-on prep time. Simple add the strawberries, yogurt, and honey to a blender (I use my Vitamix), blend until completely combined, and then pour into your ice cream maker. Then churn until the frozen yogurt is a soft-serve consistency (look at your manufacturer’s directions; this takes me about 25 minutes but it will vary based on what ice cream maker you have). That’s it! If you want a soft-serve frozen yogurt, then eat immediately after it’s finished churning. If you want a more traditional ice cream texture and/or have leftovers, you can simple freeze it. And, if you are looking for a vegan option OR don’t have an ice cream maker, check out this recipe.
Hope you enjoy this fun, summery frozen yogurt!
- 1 lb strawberries
- 3 cups full-fat plain Greek yogurt
- ¼ cup honey, or more to taste
- Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until completely combined.
- Add strawberry mixture to ice cream maker and churn per manufacturer's directions until done.
- Enjoy immediately for a soft-serve texture, and freeze leftovers for a more hard ice cream consistency.
- Let leftovers thaw for 10-15 minutes before scooping and enjoying.
