These BBQ roasted mixed nuts are the most perfect savory, nutritious, crunchy, and DELICIOUS snack! I adore flavored almonds and nuts from the grocery store (seriously…if you’re eating plain/unsalted almonds…you are missing out on LIFE). BUT…store-bought flavored can be $$$. While you obviously still have to purchase the nuts to make this recipe, making a huge batch of these BBQ seasoned nuts is much cheaper, healthier, and I daresay YUMMIER than buying from the grocery store!
*I want to acknowledge obviously I am well-aware of the current COVID-19 pandemic. I work in a hospital as a clinical Registered Dietitian and am obviously affected (personally and professionally) by everything going on (as is everyone else). I do not want to appear insensitive or ignorant; however, I do plan on continuing to focus my posts (both on social media and the blog) about food and recipes. I decided when I first started my blog almost two years ago to keep my personal account/life separate from this food account, and while I may have/will share thoughts on the Cornavirus on my personal account, I do not plan on doing so here. Obviously you do not need this account to stay informed and educated on what is going on.*
Confession: I actually made this recipe back in December!! And am just now getting around to finally sharing it with you all. I was inspired after making these espresso flavored nuts from Lexi’s Clean Kitchen during the holiday season and wanted to try a savory flavored nut. These BBQ mixed nuts remind me of Blue Diamond Habanero BBQ almonds, but honestly I love how these are mixed nuts and so easy to customize on your own!
This makes quite a large batch, and the good news is that it lasts for MONTHS. As in, I am just now finishing them up and I made them three months ago. I like having a variety of sweet/savory snack options for work, so I mix it up often! I store them in glass mason jars to keep fresh, and they are also pretty since it’s see-thru! Even though obviously the holiday season is past, I think it would be such a fun idea to give a mason jar of these BBQ mixed nuts to friends and family!
Let’s talk a little more about what you’ll need for this recipe:
Ingredients and Substitution Ideas:
Nuts
I used a mixture of almonds, cashews, pecans, peanuts, and pepitas (aka shelled pumpkin seeds) for this recipe! However, this recipe can definitely be customizable to what you have on hand or your preferences! I think sunflower seeds would be a delicious substitution for the pumpkin seeds. You can also use just 1-2 types of nuts, etc. Feel free to be a little creative here!
BBQ Seasoning
You guys. I am OBSESSED over this BBQ seasoning. It’s delicious on anything and everything. Homemade roasted kale chips, chicken, and obviously these roasted nuts. IT’S SO GOOD. And 100% salt-free too, if you need a low-sodium snack! Very low in sugar compared to many BBQ seasonings (it’s amazing how much sugar is in store-bought BBQ sauce!).
Side note: if you haven’t make my homemade 100% no added sugar BBQ sauce…you should ASAP. It’s also freezer-friendly; I love making a big batch and freezing in smaller portions to always have some on hand! ?
Spices for BBQ seasoning:
-garlic powder
-onion powder
-paprika
-cumin
-chili powder
-sugar
Just 6 spices, and they are hopefully staple pantry ingredients for you already!
In order for the seasoning to bind to the nuts, you’ll whisk egg white and water together, like in this recipe.
Storing Roasted Nuts
I’m happy to report these homemade roasted BBQ nuts stay fresh for MONTHS. I store the nuts tightly covered in a glass mason jar. I like keep a jar at home, as well as taking a jar to work to always have a healthy, delicious snack option at work!
