Creamy, perfectly sweet and spiced cinnamon apple butter that is made with ZERO added sugar! Delicious on pretty much ANYTHING you bake this fall and so much more! Spread on muffins, put on top of baked oatmeal, cooked oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, toast, plain or vanilla Greek yogurt, ice cream, etc. Note only that, this apple butter only uses TWO ingredients and your crock-pot does all the work for you!
Happy fall ya’ll! Ok, not sure where that came from. ? I have so many fun and delicious seasonal recipes coming your way featuring fall’s finest produce, especially pumpkin and apple! Last week was pumpkin, so this week I think it’s about time for some apple action. ??
This is without a doubt the easiest recipe I’ve posted yet; you just need 2 ingredients! TWO. Apples and cinnamon. That’s it, folks. Just like with this recipe, my mother-in-law ever so kindly shared some of her apple harvest with me from their apple trees. I immediately knew I wanted to make a homemade apple butter recipe with no added sugar. The apples provide so much sweetness on their own as they cook down and concentrate, that no sugar is really even needed!
What apples to use for apple butter?
I used Empire apples, which are good for making applesauce and apple butter. In case you’re wondering what types of apples are best for making apple butter and which ones are best for baking apple pie, etc., I found this chart super helpful! There are so many apple varieties that are great for making apple butter!
I’m so excited about this recipe, especially because I have a couple other recipes that will be featuring apple butter to come soon, so stay tuned! So just like with this recipe and this deliciousness, you might want to go ahead and make some of this apple butter now to have on hand for later! It stores beautifully in the freezer. Might as well make the most of apple season when you can use those apples you picked from an orchard (or your own trees!), or take advantage of local farmer’s markets near you as well as the great sales in grocery stores!
- 3 pounds apples, I used Empire*
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon**
- Cut apples in large chunks (I leave the skin on).
- Cook on low setting in crock pot/slow cooker for 8-10 hours, then stir. I blended mine in blender (of use an immersion blender if you have one) for a smooth texture.
- Makes approximately 3.5 cups.
- This will store well in the freezer to use all year-round!
**I used quite a bit of cinnamon since I love it, but feel free to use less and adjust to your taste preferences!
