These salmon burgers are filled with heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon, walnuts, and flax seed! They are going to be a staple recipe rotation for you…easy and delicious! I love prepping these ahead of time on the weekends and then they are ready during the weeknights in a matter of minutes. The salmon burgers just take a few minutes to cook, and can also be frozen to have on hand for later too!
It’s about time we have another savory recipe around here! Goodness, it’s been almost a month since I shared these lasagna stuffed peppers. Have you tried them yet?! I love when I come up with recipes on a whim…and they end up turning out pretty well! The lasagna stuffed peppers didn’t take many test batches to perfect…which is NOT the case with these heart healthy omega-3 salmon burgers! I am not exaggerating when I say I’ve made these salmon burgers about 7-8 times…BUT that’s been over the course of the last 1.5 months so it’s been a little spread out.? And the recipe makes 4 burgers, so since I’m just cooking for 2, Chris and I are able to get two meals out of this recipe!
The idea for these salmon burgers first came after discovering Aldi (one of my go-to grocery stores!) carried these delicious frozen salmon burgers. I bought them several times, but the bad thing about shopping at Aldi is that many of their items rotate and change…so sadly, I hadn’t been able to find them for several months. So what’s one to do when you’re craving a salmon burger?! I didn’t realize how easy it was to simply make them at home!
Let’s talk a bit more about the ingredients…and let me nerd out a bit about nutrition. ?
Ingredients and Nutrition
Salmon.
I use canned salmon here, as the salmon needs to be pre-cooked for this recipe. Canned salmon saves you a step of cooking the salmon and then flaking it…and to be honest, I feel it’s major waste to then grind up freshly cooked, expensive salmon for burgers. I haven’t tried using fresh salmon, but I’m sure you could. All that to say…to be honest the first time I made these burgers was the first time I had ever bought canned salmon…and I was MORTIFIED and disgusted to find small bones and pieces of skin in there! I even tried several different brands of canned salmon to see if they were all like that…(they were). So I just take a few minutes to pick through the bones/skin and discard that. Just a heads up if you’ve never bought canned salmon before like me.
Health benefits of salmon: salmon is filled with omega-3 fatty acids, which have been proven to have many heart-healthy benefits! Read more here.
Oat Flour.
The oat flour is used as a binder to help hold these burgers together! Just like salmon, oats are also heart healthy in that they are filled with fiber! Oat flour can literally be made in a matter of seconds at home! all you need are oats…I just put them in my high-speed blender, and literally less than a minute later I have fine oat flour! You can also buy oat flour at your local grocery store; look in the flour/baking section. While it’s cheapest to make your own, oat flour is a very economical flour to buy…much cheaper than buying almond flour!
Ground flax.
Flax seeds are also filled with omega-3 fatty acids! Omega-3 fatty acids can help prevent cholesterol from being deposited in the arteries leading to your heart and help prevent against strokes, heart attacks, and heart disease. Read more here.
Walnuts.
Walnuts have the highest amount of omega-3’s of any other type of nut! They provide the best texture to these salmon burgers…seriously, so much better than many other ingredients I tried testing with!
Hummus.
Hummus is made with chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans)…and while beans may not have the omega-3 content that the salmon, oats, flax, and walnuts, beans are chock full of fiber! And fiber has SO many health benefits…heart-health (like lowering cholesterol) being one of them!

- 15 ounces cooked salmon (I use canned), drained and bones/skin removed
- ½ cup oat flour (ground up oats)
- 1 tablespoon ground flax
- ½ cup walnuts, chopped
- ½ cup onion, diced
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill (or 1 tablespoon dried)
- ¼ cup hummus
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon oil, for pan-frying burgers
- In a medium bowl, mix together all ingredients except the tablespoon of oil.
- Shape into four large salmon burgers.
- At this point, you can cover and refrigerate overnight to have for a quick dinner later in the week, cook immediately, or freeze for later!
- If cooking immediately, heat oil in large pan/skillet on stove.
- Add salmon burgers and cook on medium heat until golden brown and cooked through; a few minutes on each side. Since the salmon is already cooked, you don't have to worry about eating raw salmon or checking the temperature on these!
- Serve on buns with slaw, over a salad, or anyway that sounds good to you!
